At the Ordinary Meeting of 18 August 2026, Oberon Council resolved to place the proposed Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy on public exhibition for a period of 28 days, commencing 20 August 2026.

This policy provides governance arrangements, approval requirements, risk classifications and accountability measures to ensure AI is used in a manner consistent with Council's legislative obligations, community expectations and organisational values. This policy also supports innovation and productivity while managing risks associated with privacy, cyber security, records management, bias and transparency.

Objectives and Scope:

  • Establish principles for the responsible and ethical use of AI
  • Ensure appropriate governance and accountability arrangements are in place
  • Support innovation while managing organisational risk
  • Protect information, privacy and security
  • Ensure appropriate human oversight of AI-assisted activities
  • Provide a framework for assessing and approving higher-risk AI applications
  • Support transparency and public confidence in Council's use of emerging technologies; and
  • Provide guidance to staff, Councillors, contractors and other authorised users of AI

    technologies.

The report presented to Council and the proposed policy are available for download in the Documents tab of this page. Community members are invited to review the updated policy and provide their submissions during the exhibition period.

Public submissions can be made below or sent via email to council@oberon.nsw.gov.au and must be received by the closure of the public exhibition period at 4:30pm on Friday 18 September 2026.
